Stephen Terry and James Martin team up to tackle Welsh hospital food
Most people know Stephen Terry as the Welsh man behind some great Michelin rated food, but as part of a new BBC series Terry is partnering up with James Martin in order to get some healthier and better tasting food into NHS hospitals.
A typical plate of hospital food at a NHS hospital in Wales might include congealed custard, lumpy mash, and sugary like jelly. For the thousands that live in Wales this might be enough to make anyone want to get out of the hospital.
It is not a surprise to hear that hospital menus are pretty uninviting, but now celebrity chef Martin has decided to do something about it as part of Operation Hospital Food on the BBC. The premise of the show is that Martin will remodel hospital food the same way that celebrity chef Jamie Oliver revamped school dinners.
In order to really make things interesting, James has asked ten other well known chefs to help him out as he works with local hospitals. His goals are to offer better quality food while also teaching chefs how to keep consistent standards and better deal with their kitchen wastes.
To help in Wales Stephen Terry is working with Martin with the goal of overhauling and improving the menus in Abergavenny at the Nevill Hall Hospital. Also working with the duo will be Health Minister for Wales Lesley Griffiths who has pledged to work on rolling out a standard menu.
Martin said that they want him to be involved in working with all of the Wales hospitals and one person in the government acknowledging that this could be a great program to roll out is a very large sign of approval in the country. Griffiths stated that it is very important to look at patients’ nutrition and consider the fact that proper hydration and nutrition is just as important as any medications that they are given during their stay.
