New whisky launched from the Scot Distillery
This week a new whisky was launched and forms a third part in the Scot distillery’s “Age of Discovery.” Brought out in 2011, it already includes a Bourbon and Madeira, which are finished in casks.
This whisky is nineteen years-old with 40% alcohol, and is finished in giant South American wine casks. When released on the market, it will sell for £75 and be exclusively available in the global travel market.
The makers say that this latest project draws a parallel between the naturalist Charles Darwin and this project. Brian Kinsman, the malt master, says that the wine grapes meld with the whiskey’s flavour to give a smooth, yet spicy finish in the drink. Not only that, but the maker also says that the berry flavours give it a sweet and velvety finish in the mouth.
While it’s common to use wine in the production of Port or Sherry, several distilleries do offer a finish done in red wine casks. Two discontinued whiskies used wine barrels for finishing. They are Auchentoshan, who made seventeen year-old whisky with casks from Bordeaux barrels and Bruichladdich, which did similarly in using barrels that had been used to finish grapes from the Château Haut Brion.
