World Health Organization voice concerns over child obesity
WHO, the public health department of United Nations on Tuesday has accused the food corporations of flouting the regulations of advertising unhealthy food products to kids and also igniting the obesity issue among them. According to WHO, the measures by the British government to curb such promotion among children through TV adverts is not doing enough to change habits and attitudes.
There are strict rules on advertisement during kid’s shows, however it has been noted that such advertisements are aired during other time of the day and kids are still exposed to them which is especially true for the prime time of 6pm to 10:30pm where there are no such rules for shows like X factor and Britain’s Got Talent. According to researchers these shows are viewed by young children and therefore they are still exposed to advertising. The food corporations are also targeting the youngsters through mobiles, and computer games as well as social networking sites like Facebook
World Health Organization however is demanding strict rules be applied all across Europe to curb the promotion of such unhealthy foods among children which are high in fat and sugar as well as salt. According to WHO’s regional director in Europe, a great number of kids are falling prey to such marketing policies. He also added that children are getting into such ill practices of consuming salt and fat in places like schools and sports academies where they should be taught otherwise.
Britain is one such country that has been taking active steps in preventing children from falling prey to malicious ads about food products, sweets and snacks. Though, it is not among six key nations: Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Spain, France and Slovenia that have made rules to prevent marketing of such foods to the children. According to the report there are certain flaws in the regulation in UK.
