Healthy eating for a happy life
We are constantly reminded about the need for healthy eating. It seems that we are bombarded with nutritional recommendations on a daily basis, some of which can be confusing or even contradictory. Here is a simple guide on how to whip up a healthy breakfast!
Five a day
In 2002/03 the UK government introduced a nutritional programme that was designed to encourage the population to increase their intake of fruit and vegetables. The expression ‘one of your five a day’ has now been incorporated into every day vocabulary and it can be seen decorating the fruit and vegetable aisles of all the major supermarkets.
A good way to ensure you get all five is to add fresh fruit to a meal, whether that is breakfast or a quick snack. Fruit adds essential vitamins and minerals to your diet, enhances the flavour of a dish and adds a rich variety of colours that can make a meal look even more attractive.
Fruit, glorious fruit
Incorporating healthy recipes into your morning routine is easy: in fact, one the tastiest breakfast options is the combination of cereals with fresh fruit.
Thankfully the wet spring produced a glut of fresh fruit and there’s no better way to use this than as an addition to muesli, porridge or any cereal of your choice. Teamed with delicious crunchy oats, you will not only be ticking off one of your five a day but you’ll also stay full until lunchtime as oats release their energy slowly.
If you really don’t have much of an appetite in the morning, why not add some cereal to yoghurt and then freeze it? Alternatively, treat yourself to a lovely smoothie with fruit, milk and muesli.
Breakfast alternatives
The best way to start the day is with breakfast, with the current advice from the NHS suggesting that those who skip this meal will miss out on essential vitamins and minerals and may find that their energy and concentration levels are flagging during the course of the day.
Cereal is a great way to start any day, but if you want to mix it up there are an array of scrumptious alternatives. Poached, boiled or scrambled eggs are very tasty and if you add some smoked salmon to accompany your scrambled eggs you’ll have a delectable breakfast alternative if you want to vary your morning routine.
The wonderful thing about breakfast is that you can be as inventive as you please, and with so many options, why would you want to skip it?
