Tasty meals abound with the start of the 2012 leek season

With this years leek season, which takes place from November-April, fast approaching, it’s time to put them to good use with some mouth watering recipes that include these great flavoursome vegetables that are also economical.
This is an increasingly difficult time with every visit to a supermarket seeming to cost more than the last, so there really is no better time to make the most of our fresh and seasonal produce to keep meals tasty and the pounds in our pocket. Delicious meals for the family don’t have to cost a fortune, and by trying one of the following nutritious recipes you can feed, and satisfy, a family of four and still get change out of a fiver.

– Pays to plan – planning your family’s meals for the whole week will mean less wasted ingredients
– Favour fresh – fresh ingredients, such as lovely fresh British leeks, are much more economic than pre-prepared meals – and likely to be far more nutritious
– Stay simple – stick to tasty but simple dishes that don’t require a trolley full of fancy ingredients
– Waste not want not – get creative with leftovers. Older fruit and vegetables make delicious smoothies or soups
– Online only – shop online to avoid being tempted by (often naughty!) extras
– Supermarket survey – investigate different supermarkets for price and quality
