The World and its Wines
Red, white or rose, with food or without, this nectar is essential for any decadent moment. Dionysus, the Greek god of the grape harvest and wine making, was also a symbol of ecstasy and decadence not without good reason. There is an art to drinking wine however. This begins with making the right choice in the shop. There is nothing worse than getting home, popping the cork, only to find you have ended up with something sharp and vinegary, not the warm, flavoursome delight you were hoping for. There are countries and regions that have been renowned for their wine for many years, but there are also new names emerging and gaining greater respect. Here is what to expect from a few of these.
Italy
The region now known as Italy has been producing wine for centuries. The Greeks grew grapes there; the Romans were responsible for extending this practice and began planting many of their own vineyards. Its geography is such that means that most of the country is suitable for vineyard cultivation, meaning its productive capabilities are huge and it can afford to export wine all over the world whilst keeping up with demand at home. Its reputation can be trusted from the popularity of Italian grapes such as Chianti, Barolo, and Sangiovese.
France
France, the world’s biggest wine producer, also has the Roman’s to thank for the beginning of this tradition. In France the part of the country, both region and town, are very important when distinguishing the wines produced. This means there are certain sorts of wine, for example Burgundy and Bordeaux, that cannot be reproduced anywhere else. There are many French grapes that, due to their immense popularity, have been exported and cultivated elsewhere for example Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.
United States
Not traditionally thought of as a hub of wine making, the United States has in more recent years begun to create a reputation for itself and its wine. Primarily grown in sunnier regions like California, American wine is often softer and fruitier, an easy drinking experience. If you are looking to buy wine online you will have to plan in advance what sort of wine you are after and for what sort of occasion. It is also good to have tried it first if you are buying in bulk from a far away destination such as this.
As well as these well trusted wine producing countries there are some surprising new things coming out elsewhere in the world. China is producing wine on a large scale. Some countries in Eastern Europe and even the UK are starting to produce some respected flavours. So keep an eye out and do not be too dismissive if you do not recognise the country of origin straight away as a wine source.
