Wine Oh Wine Oh Wine
A wine connoisseur will tell you that only certain types of wine will go with particular meals. So if we are going to drink wine, we might as well buy a bottle that compliments the meal we plan to have. But short of reading the label on every single bottle, how does the average person know what wine to get, especially when the best wine to compliment a meal can depend on how the meal is cooked.
It is thought by many that Lamb is the best meat to have with wine with, and you couldn’t really go wrong with a nice Bordeaux or a Rioja. Chicken can be a bit more complicated as it has a more neutral flavour and so the wine to match will depend on how the chicken is cooked and what it is cooked in. A roast chicken would go well with a lightly oaked Chardonnay whereas a grilled bird would go better with a Sauvignon Blanc. Like the Chicken, matching wine with pasta can also be complex, and depends on the sauce the pasta is cooked in. Cheese sauces or tomato-based sauces are best eaten with a crisp dry white such as Verdicchio but creamy sauces are best matched with a Soave or a Pinot Bianco. Sicilian and Puglian Reds will go with any meat based sauce such as a Bolognese. Something that you might not necessarily think goes with wine, is soup. Whilst difficult to match together, when you get it right, they taste great together. Chunky soups go better with a medium bodied red such as Syrah whereas a creamy soup would go well with a dry Italian white such as a Pinot Grigio.
Find the right wine, and it will do with almost anything you eat.
